March 1 Ice Fishing Report

March 1, 2020

So far the start of the year has panned out to be ideal for snow/ice conditions in the Northwoods. There were significant struggles early with heavy slush and questionable ice however, a recent cold snap and minimal snowfall has hardened up the slush and allowed for very easy access virtually everywhere.

Anglers fishing out of Cabin O’ pines on Pelican Lake have experienced a slowdown in activity. Lots of fish are being detected by sonar, but getting them to bit has been difficult. A recent trip by Ross Coyer yielded only a few bites during an afternoon of scouting for crappies. Various depths were explored as well as both rock structure and weed lines. Ross also tried both live and artificial baits with no success on either. Without venturing farther/deeper it seems that fish activity at the depth and structure between 8-18′ has slowed significantly from just a month ago.

With warmer weather on the horizon, we should see an uptick in activity. Our main target now with Pike and Walleye season closed will be to target pan fish. Our next attempt at scouting will likely be toward deeper water where the oxygen levels will be higher.

Keep it reeled.
